Washington Post Co.'s first-quarter earnings slipped 66% due to a write-down and significant declines at its Kaplan education unit, which accounts for most of the company's revenue and profit.

Post Co. said it will continue to feel the effect of the U.S. Department of Education's crackdown on the recruiting practices of for-profit colleges like the ones Kaplan operates.
